Medway Test Spatial Reasoning: 5 Expert Tips for Parents

Medway Test Spatial Reasoning: 5 Essential Tips for This Often-Overlooked Paper

If you are a parent in Medway preparing your child for the 11+, you likely have a stack of English and Maths practice papers on your kitchen table. But there is one section of the Medway Test that often catches students (and parents) by surprise: Spatial Reasoning.

Unlike the English and Maths papers, which are based on the National Curriculum your child learns at school, Spatial Reasoning is a test of innate logic and visual thinking. Because it isn’t taught in the classroom, many children find it the most intimidating part of the Reasoning paper.

Why Spatial Reasoning Matters

In the Medway Test (provided by GL Assessment), the Reasoning paper is a significant component of the final weighted score. Spatial Reasoning specifically tests your child’s ability to manipulate 2D and 3D shapes in their mind.

The good news? While it isn’t “taught” in school, spatial awareness is a skill that can be developed with the right techniques. Here are five essential tips to help your child master this overlooked paper.

1. Master the “Net to Cube” Transition

One of the most common questions involves “Nets.” Your child will be shown a 2D flat shape (a net) and asked which 3D cube it would form when folded.

  • The Tip: Teach your child to look for “opposite” faces. On a standard net, faces that are separated by one square will always be opposite each other and can never be touching on a 3D cube. Eliminating options based on this one rule can often lead directly to the correct answer.

2. Use the “Mirror” Technique for Reflections

Reflections and rotations are staples of the Medway Test. Children often try to imagine the whole shape moving, which can be overwhelming.

  • The Tip: Encourage them to pick one distinct feature of the shape—perhaps a small dot in the corner or a specific shaded line—and track only that feature in the multiple-choice options. If the dot is on the left in the original, it must be on the right in a reflection.

3. Develop “X-Ray Vision” for Hidden Shapes

Some questions ask which small shape is “hidden” within a larger, more complex pattern. This requires a high level of focus and the ability to ignore “noise.”

  • The Tip: Suggest that your child traces the small shape in their mind (or very lightly with a finger) over the options. They should look specifically for the angles; if the small shape has an acute angle, any option with only right angles can be immediately crossed out.

4. The Power of Elimination

In Spatial Reasoning, the clock is your child’s biggest enemy. With multiple sections and tight time limits, they shouldn’t spend two minutes “solving” a single question.

  • The Tip: It is often faster to find why four of the answers are wrong than to find why one is right. Teach your child to look for “outliers”—shapes that have been flipped the wrong way, have the wrong shading, or have extra lines.

5. Take it Off the Page

Because this isn’t a school subject, the best way to practice is often away from the desk.

  • The Tip: Use physical objects. If your child is struggling with 3D rotation, use LEGO or actual cardboard boxes. Cut a cereal box open to show them how a “net” works. Physical play builds the neural pathways needed for mental visualisation much faster than a workbook alone.

How Tuition Academy Medway Can Help

At Tuition Academy Medway, our qualified teachers specialise in breaking down these “hidden” subjects. We don’t just give students practice papers; we teach them the underlying logic and the “shortcuts” used by successful 11+ candidates. In our small group settings, we can identify exactly which spatial patterns a child is struggling with and provide the specific visual tools they need to succeed.

Helping Your Child Feel Confident

The Medway Test is as much about confidence as it is about knowledge. By familiarising your child with Spatial Reasoning now, you remove the element of surprise on exam day. With a few simple strategies and a bit of practice, what once felt like a “mystery” paper can become a high-scoring opportunity.
