Kent Test vs Medway Test: 7 Key Differences Every Parent Must Know

Kent Test vs. Medway Test: 7 Key Differences Every Parent Must Know

For parents in the Medway towns, the 11+ season often involves two distinct hurdles: the Medway Test and the Kent Test. While both exams are designed to identify children suited for a grammar school education, they are not identical.

Understanding the nuances between these two assessments is vital. It allows you to tailor your child’s revision and ensures they walk into the exam hall feeling prepared for the specific challenges of each paper. Here are the seven key differences you need to know.

1. The Extended Writing Task

One of the most significant differences lies in the writing component.

  • Medway Test: Includes a specific Extended Writing paper. This is a marked part of the test and contributes significantly to the final total score.

  • Kent Test: Also includes a writing task, but it is not marked as part of the initial assessment. It is only used by headteachers in “borderline” cases or during the appeals process.

2. The Weighting of Subjects

How your child’s marks are calculated varies between the two.

  • Medway Test: Typically places a heavy emphasis on English and Maths. The final score is a “weighted” total of the three papers (English, Maths, and Reasoning).

  • Kent Test: Requires a child to reach a specific threshold score in all three individual sections (English, Maths, and Reasoning) as well as a total aggregate score. This means a child cannot “make up” for a low Reasoning score with a very high Maths score in Kent as easily as they might in Medway.

3. Spatial Reasoning Specifics

While both tests involve Reasoning, the content differs.

  • Medway Test: The Reasoning paper is known for its heavy inclusion of Spatial Reasoning (manipulating shapes and 3D nets).

  • Kent Test: Focuses more broadly on Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. While there is overlap, the Medway paper often feels more visually demanding for students.

4. Exam Format and Boards

Both tests currently use GL Assessment as their provider, but the way the questions are structured can feel different. The Medway Test is specifically commissioned by Medway Council to reflect the local curriculum, whereas the Kent Test is one of the largest 11+ assessments in the country with its own distinct layout.

5. Timing and Location

  • Medway Test: Usually takes place during the week for children attending Medway primary schools, often in their own classrooms.

  • Kent Test: If you live in Medway but are applying for Kent schools, your child will likely sit the test on a Saturday at a designated “test centre” (usually a Kent grammar school). The unfamiliar environment can add an extra layer of nerves for some children.

6. The “Pass” Threshold

The pass mark for the Medway Test is determined each year based on the performance of the cohort, aiming to select the top 23–25% of children. In Kent, the pass mark is also set annually, but because the pool of applicants is much larger (including thousands of “out of county” applicants), the competition for specific schools can be much higher.

7. The Appeals Process

If your child narrowly misses the pass mark:

  • Medway: Has a “Review” process which takes place before the formal appeal. You submit your child’s schoolwork to be looked at by a panel.

  • Kent: The primary route is a formal Parental Appeal, which happens after school places are allocated in March.
